Let us join Lupita and her brother Salvador, as they go on a journey to the United States in hopes of having a better life for their family. On our journey, we will be doing activities that will help us earn points. The goal is to earn 100 points. You can do it!

Remember the following things:

You have to get 40 points in Layer C to get to Layer B
You have to get 30 points in Layer B to get to Layer A
You have to get 30 points in Layer A

Layer C: Basic Knowledge

- You have to earn 40 points in Layer C

Required:

__________ 2. Reading Comprehension Questions (10 pts)

Your Choice:

__________ 3. Trace Lupita and Salvador’s journey from the time they leave Ensenada till they arrive in Indio. (10 pts.)

__________ 4. Make a Vocabulary Crossword Puzzle. (10 pts)

__________ 5. Make a storyboard for the story. It has to have at least 8 cells, with illustration and summary. (10 pts.)

__________ 6. Make a booklet. Write a summary for every part, and make a drawing to represent each part. (10 pts.)

___________7. Design a board game using the story as background. (10 pts.)

___________ 8. Write a report about the author, Patricia Beatty. (10 pts.)

Layer B: Application

You have to earn 30 points in Layer B

Required:

___________1. Make a Spanish - English dictionary using the Spanish words used in the story. Use at least 15 words, and use each word in a sentence. (10 pts)

___________3. Write at least 5 entries in a diary, from any character’s point of view. (10 pts.)

___________ 4. Role-play your favorite scene in the story. (10 pts.)

___________ 6. Make a song or poem about Lupita’s life. (10 pts.)

Layer A: Critical Thinking and Analysis

You have to earn 30 points in Layer A

Required:

___________ 1. Lupita’s Monologue/ Salvador’s Monologue. (10 pts.)

Your Choice:

___________ 2. Have a debate with a partner, or by yourself, write a position paper on whether Lupita and Salvador should go to the United States. (10 pts.)

___________ 3. Father’s Coat - Symbolism. Draw father’s coat, and what it symbolizes. (10 pts. )

___________ 4. Make a book review. Be sure to include what the book is about, what you liked about the book and what you learned. (10 pts.)

___________ 5. Add a new character. Write a scene with the new character, describe how will Lupita interact with the new character.
