Unit Title: Health and Your Appearance

Unit Objectives:

Know and explain the types and parts of teeth, ear, eye, and skin.

Explain proper care for and common mouth/teeth, ear, eye, skin, and feet/posture problems.

Understand and explain how we see and hear.

MAP Objectives:

Knowledge: Principles and practices of physical and mental health.

Time Frame for unit: 8/9 class periods + 1 class period for testing.

You are to decide which level you would like to work toward. Select from the assignments listed to earn that total number of points. Check the scoring guides to see how you will be graded. The emphasis is on what you learned, not how many papers you filled out.

You may leave papers in your folder in the tan brown file cabinet-drawer 1. I must sign your sheet verifying you earned the points listed.

You will take a pre and post-test to see what you learned.

On independent working days, you must be working. IF you finish early, you must be reading. You can defend up to three C-level assignments each day.

C level- 65 points is the MAX you can earn from this level (oral defense for points)

5 pts. Using the model, identify and describe the major parts of the eye (cornea, iris, lens,

Scoring Guide for Worksheet (8 points each)

You are to answer the questions on the worksheet.

Grading: I will ask you four questions from the worksheet. You will earn 2 points for each one answered correctly.

 

C-Level Scoring Guides

Scoring Guide for Flash Cards (20 points)

Using a piece of lined notebook paper, fold in half and then in half again. Open up to find 8 squares. Cut out to make flash cards. If you need larger cards, you may use index cards they you provide.

Write the word on one side and the definition on the other. Use your words in the definition because I want to know if you know what the word means.

Learn them.

Grading: I will randomly chose 20 cards. You are to tell me the definition of the words I have chosen. You will get one point for each one you get correct.

Scoring Guide for Chapter section reading and questions. (20 points)

You are to read the assigned pages or section.

Grading: I will ask you 10 questions from the reading. You will earn two points for each one you answer correctly and completely.

Scoring Guide for Video (10 points)

You will watch a video(s) and be able to tell me five things you learned after watching the video.

Grading: You will earn five points for watching the video and five points for telling me five things you learned that relates to the topic.

Scoring Guide for Article and Magazine Reading (15 points)

You must read for 30 minutes on a particular topic. This could be from various sources.

Grading: You will be asked to summarize the information read and learned. You will earn 15 (five points for each article you reviewed) points for accuracy, enthusiasm, and completeness.

Scoring Guide for Lecture (5 points per day)

You are to be in class for the entire lecture and take complete notes.

Grading: You will earn the five points by taking complete notes.

Scoring Guide for Audiotape (10 points)

You are to listen to the audiotape of the chapter and follow along in the book.

Grading: When finished with the tape, I will ask you five questions from the reading. You will earn two points for each one answered correctly.

Scoring Guide for Model (5 points)

You are to use the model to demonstrate knowledge of or explain a principal related to hearing, vision, or teeth.

Grading: You will earn points based on accuracy of identification of parts and explanation.

Scoring Guide for Worksheet (5-10 points)

You are to complete the worksheet and be able to explain the concepts covered.

Grading: You will earn 1-2 points for explaining the concept properly when questioned.

Scoring Guide for Internet Scavenger Hunt (15 points)

You are to use one class period and the Internet to complete the worksheet.

Grading: You will be asked five questions from the scavenger hunt, you will earn three points per correct answer.

B-Level Problem Solving Lab (15 points)

You must complete the following form for your points.

You will earn three points for each question. You may also discuss with me if you so choose.

What is the question you are trying to solve?

What is your hypothesis?

What procedure did you use to test this? Use additional paper if necessary.

What were the results? This should be a chart and graph.

What is the conclusion? Was your hypothesis correct?

A-Level Sheet Opinion Paper (20 Points)

You are to do some research. Locate at least three articles over the topic. These could be from the Internet (article at least 2 pages), magazines, books, newspapers, etc. You are to give a short summary over each article and then write a ½ pg. opinion over the topic. This is to be in paragraph (5-7 sentences) format and can be on the back of this sheet. You must mention some of your research in your opinion paper.

Grading: You will earn three points for every summary and two points for each citation. The additional five points will be earned based on your opinion paper (spelling and grammar are important for these additional points).
