Biology Unit 5 Cell Processes Layered Assignments
Alan Dewey
Wabasso High School
1. Explain how cell processes are influenced by internal and external factors, such as pH and temperature, and how cells and organisms respond to changes in their environment to maintain homeostasis.
2. Compare and contrast passive transport (including osmosis and facilitated transport) with active transport, such as endocytosis and exocytosis.
3. Explain why cells are small.
4. Explain the process of mitosis in the formation of identical new cells and maintaining chromosome number during asexual reproduction.
5. Recognize that a gene mutation in a cell can result in uncontrolled cell division called cancer, and how exposure of cells to certain chemicals and radiation increases mutations and thus increases the chance of cancer.
____ *1. Summarize how cells maintain homeostasis (VL-5 pts).
____ 2a. Make a table or Venn diagram comparing passive and active transport (LM-5 pts).
____ 2b. Make a poster comparing passive and active transport (VS-5 pts).
____
2c. Complete section 8.1 worksheet (VL-5 pts).
Day 6- Cell Size
____ 3a. Write a paragraph explaining why cells are small (VL-5 pts).
____
3b. Make a poster explaining why cells are small (VS-5 pts).
Days 7-9- Cell Cycle and Mitosis (choose 2 from 4c to 4i)
____ *4a. Complete mitosis worksheets (VL-5 pts).
____ *4b. Complete pipe cleaner activity (BK-5 pts).
____ 4c. Draw, label, and explain the stages of the cell cycle and the phases of mitosis (VS-10 pts).
____ 4d. In groups of 4, create a skit about the cell cycle (BK, IE-10 pts).
____ 4e. With a partner, write a song about the cell cycle (MU, IE-10 pts).
____ 4f. Create a flipbook that shows the stages of the cell cycle and phases of mitosis (LM, VS-10 pts).
____ 4g. Pick one of the phases of mitosis and draw a four-frame cartoon. Make sure to creatively tell the story of that part of the cell cycle using cartoon figures (VS, VL-10 pts).
____ 4h. With a partner, create a game involving the cell cycle and mitosis (LM, VS, IE-10 pts).
____
4i. With a partner, write and perform a news report about the
cell cycle (VL, BK-10 pts).
Day 10- Mitosis Lab
____
*4j. Complete onion cell mitosis lab (BK-5 pts).
Day 11- Cancer
____ *5. Write a paragraph summarizing what cancer is and how it works (VL-5 pts).
Day 12-Test/Work Day
____ *All. Complete practical applications test (VL-10 pts).
____ *All. Complete practice exercises in class (VL, LM-5 pts).
____ All. Listen to lecture and take notes each day (VL) 1 2 3 4 5
____ All. Complete review worksheet (VL, IA-5 pts).
____ All. Make vocabulary flashcards for all relevant terms in the unit (VL-5 pts).
____ All. Complete end of chapter questions pg. 224-225 #1-5, 7, 9-13, 15-17, 19, 21-23, 26, 1-4 (VL-10 pts).
____
All. Secretary position- proofread and edit another student’s
written assignment (VL-5 pts).
Day 13- Layer A work day/All assignments due
____
*1. Perform the cell transport labs, complete the
lab sheets, and write a summary in your journal.
LAYER A- CRITICAL THINKING & ANALYSIS OF REAL WORLD ISSUES (15 points)
Using 2 resources (options 1 and 2 only), either write a 1 page paper or create a 6 slide powerpoint presentation exploring one of the questions below. The last paragraph or slide should include your conclusion.
____ 1. What are the most recent research finding on cancer and their cures?
____ 2. Research a specific type of cancer. Tell about the disease, its cause, how it is treated and what can be done to prevent it. Pictures and diagrams would be helpful.
____ 3. Imagine that you are developing a drug that will inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Use your knowledge of the cell cycle to describe how the drug would target and prevent the multiplication of cancer cells. Compare this to an actual cancer drug.
____
4. Go to bdol.glencoe.com/mitosis, scroll down and
click on the Ch. 8 link. Next, scroll down and click on “How
Does Cancer Grow.” Click through each step on the page and
write 1-2 sentences summarizing each step. Find a second site
about how cancer grows and compare the two sites.
