Biology Unit 8 DNA Layered Assignments

Alan Dewey
Wabasso High School

OBJECTIVES

1.  Explain the relationships among DNA, genes and chromosomes.

2.   Describe the process of DNA replication and the role of DNA and RNA in assembling protein molecules.

3.  Recognize that the work of the cell is carried out primarily by proteins, most of which are enzymes, and that protein function depends on the amino acid sequence and the shape it takes as a consequence of the interactions between those amino acids.

4.  Explain how mutations like deletions, insertions, rearrangements or substitutions of DNA segments in gametes may have no effect, may harm, or rarely may be beneficial, and can result in genetic variation within a species.

Using 2 resources cited below, either write a 1 page paper or create a 6 slide powerpoint presentation exploring one of the questions below.  When answering questions the first paragraph should be an introduction, the second paragraph should give information (pro and con), and the last paragraph or slide should include your conclusion and opinion on the question posed.  Make sure you tie your question in to the material discussed in class.

____ 1.  Can mutations be helpful or are they always bad?  Explain with two specific mutation examples.

____ 2.   What are the most important milestones in DNA discovery?
