OBJECTIVES

1. The student will explain how Doppler evidence indicates our universe is expanding in all directions.

2. The student will recognize that the universe consists of many billions of galaxies, each containing many billions of stars and that there are vast distances that separate these galaxies and stars from one another.

3. The student will identify different types of stars and galaxies and describe how stars, galaxies and the universe change over time.

4.  The student will understand the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram.

LAYER C- BASIC UNDERSTANDING (Choose a total of 75 pts from the assignments below.

 Day 1- Tools of Modern Astronomy and Characteristics of Stars (Sections 21.1-21.2)

____ 1   *Read section 21.2 and complete worksheets (VL-10 pts). 

 Day 2- Lives of Stars (Section 21.3)

____ 2.   Read section 21.3 and complete section worksheet (VL-5 pts).

____ 3. Create a poster showing the life cycle of stars (VS-5 pts).

____ 4. Write a short story about one star going through its life cycle (VL-5 pts). 

 Day 3- Galaxies (Section 21.4)

____ 5.   Read section 21.4 and complete section worksheet (VL-5 pts).

____ 6. Create a poster showing the different types of galaxies (VS- 5 pts). 

 Day 4- History of the Universe (Section 21.5)

    ____ 7. Create a poster explaining the big bang theory (VS-5 pts).

____ 8. Write a paragraph summarizing the big bang theory (VL-5 pts).

Days 5-6 Constellations

____ 9. *Perform the introductory constellation activity (VS, VL-5 pts).

    ____ 10. *Make a poster of one constellation.  After the quiz, tape your constellation on the ceiling in the correct place (BK-5 pts).

____ 11 Complete star gazing activity (NA-10 pts).

    ____ 12. You are a dog named Rover observing the night sky from your doghouse. Write a diary of at least four journal entries of at least one paragraph per entry that span a six month time period. Explain how the view changes nightly, why these changes are happening, and questions you have about it (VL-10 pts).

LAYER B- APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE (10 points)

    ____ 1. *Complete “Star Stories” project as described on pg. 743.  You will pick three constellations, research the myth behind one of the constellations, and create your own myth about that constellation.

LAYER A- CRITICAL THINKING & ANALYSIS OF REAL WORLD ISSUES (15 points)

Write a three paragraph paper no longer than one page to answer one question below.  The questions may require additional research.  The first paragraph should be an introductory paragraph.  The second paragraph should give facts and information about your question.  The third paragraph should give your opinion based on your research.  You should list your sources below.
