Microscopes & Ecology

Objectives: At the end of this unit you will be able to:

1. Name all parts of a microscope.
2. Know the function of each part of the microscope.
3. Use a microscope properly.
4. Make a dry mount slide.
5. Make a wet mount slide.
6. Describe ecology.
7. Identify important aspects of an organism’s environment.
8. Trace the flow of energy and nutrients in the living and nonliving worlds.
9. Describe the various nutrient cycles that exist.
10. Explain the difference between a niche and a habitat.
11. Compare how organisms satisfy their nutritional needs.
12. Explain the difference between a food web and a food chain.
13. Describe different relationships organisms share.
14. Describe ways in which humans impact the environment.

 

Required Assignments. (This means you MUST do them.)

Create a display of various insects in an ecosystem (TP will work either alone or as pair – find all animals included in the field guide and label).

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS: Complete one "layer" before going on to another layer. Each assignment has a point value based on the amount of time and effort necessary to complete that task. You must earn the required number of points in any one layer before moving to the next layer.

___ 6. Read pages 6 – 10 in your book on the characteristics of living things.  Be able to answer questions. (5 points)   

___ 7. Read pages 37 – 47 in your book on organisms and their environment.  Be able to answer questions. (5 points)  For an additional 5 points complete the worksheet that goes with this section entitled, “Reinforcement and Study guide Section 2.1 – Organisms and their environment.”

___ 14. List 20 animals found in the White Mountains. Include at least 3 fish, 3 birds, 3 mammals. Identify each as a primary consumer, secondary consumer or tertiary consumer. List what they eat and label them as herbivores, carnivores, or omnivores.  (10 points) 

___ 15. Draw or make an example of a food chain or food web for any area of your choice.  Be sure that your chain or web is accurate for your area (this means you need to investigate what lives there!). Include at least 15 animals. (10 points) 

___ 16. Complete the worksheet entitled “Principles of Ecology – How the cowbird affects songbird populations”. Be able to answer questions. (5 points)  

___ 17. Using construction paper and plain drawing paper, make a minimum 10 page children's book on any ten vocabulary terms for this chapter. Illustrate your book. (10 points)

___ 18. Make a poster that shows one of the three nutrient cycles within ecosystem (hint: nitrogen, water, or carbon). (5 points each – up to 15 points total for activity) 

___ 19. Complete the lab entitled, “Detecting carbon dioxide.”  Be able to answer questions.     (5 points) 

___ 20. Complete the worksheet entitled, “Reteaching Skills – Trophic Levels.”  Be able to answer questions. (5 points)

___ 22. Make some sort of poster or display that show the survival relationships. (5 points) 

___ 23. Make a collage that shows the characteristics of life. (5 points)

____________  “B” Level: Choose ONE only.

___ 1. (TP only) Complete the lab entitled “Mammal Teeth”.  

___ 2. Draw or make an example of a food chain or food web for any area of your choice.  Be sure that your chain or web is accurate for your area (this means you need to investigate what lives there!). Include at least 15 animals. – YES, you can use the one you did for “C” level if you like.  After you have done this … eliminate one animal in your food chain or web.  Write an essay as to what effect this would have for each of the other animals in your food chain or web.

___ 4. How do humans affect an ecosystem?  Come up with a way to show me! 

___ 5. (TP only) Under the microscope, look at a couple drops of pond water and answer the following questions:

      How many microscopic animals are in a drop of pond water?

      How do animals move that live in pond water?

Find four things in your pond water sample:  Two should be something that you think is an animal, and the two others should be something that you think is a plant. Make a good sketch of each and write several sentences that tell why you think each one is what you say it is.
