LC Reading/ Comprehension Unit:  The Wizard of OZ

§110.14. English Language Arts and Reading, Grade 3

TEKS: (7) Reading/Comprehension of Literary Text/Drama. Students understand, make inferences and draw conclusions about the structure and elements of drama and provide evidence from text to support their understanding. Students are expected to explain the elements of plot and character as presented through dialogue in scripts that are read, viewed, written, or performed.

Students will be able to:

 (A)  sequence and summarize the plot's main events and explain their influence on future events;

(B)  describe the interaction of characters including their relationships and the changes they undergo; and

(C)  identify whether the narrator or speaker of a story is first or third person.

Section I: C Layer                                                                                                 65 points

1.       Listen to the audiobook, can hear the story in any language but must be 1st heard in English                         

2.       Watch The Wizard of OZ movie.                                                             10 pts.

3.       Write paragraph on Dorothy’s dream sequence.  Must be typed not handwritten. 10 pts.                                                                                                      

4.       Read your favorite chapter of The Wizard of OZ book.  Answer 5 questions (you choose)                                                                                                             10 pts. My choice = 15 pts.

5.       Make a poster of 2 different friends that Dorothy can bring on her journey.  Include why and how they provide help                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          10 pts.

6.       Find 2 newspaper articles from the 1950’s or 60 are explaining the dream to reality situation that happens in The Wizard of OZ.  Paste them on paper. Highlight important features.                                                                                                                                               15 pts. 

7.       Watch The Wizard of OZ Play .Take notes and give me an oral summary.                     10 pts.

8.       Participate in class Round Robyn discussion of the story                                         10 pts.

9.       Work with a partner to make a mobile of the characters in the story, describe what changes they went thru.                                                                                                     10 pts.

10.   Find a current (this year) magazine or newspaper article that talks about The Wizard of OZ. Give summary.                                                                                                         20 pts.

Section II: B Layer             Choose only one                                          15 points

1.       Build a model for Emerald City; be sure to emphasize any rules or guidelines for the city. Be prepared to demonstrate your Emerald city model to the class.

2.       Interview someone who has had to undergo an extensive journey to reach a goal.  Find out the necessary steps the person took to reach the goal, did it affect the person and family?

3.       Re-enact a scene from the story, must demonstrate acting or singing abilities

Section III: A Layer            Choose only one                                                      20 points

1.       Write an alternate ending to the story; will your ending be narrated by you or someone else?

2.       Form your opinion on the character of Dorothy, persuade me on whether she should change or stay the same?

3.       Write a letter to the author do you agree that a person should have courage, brains, and a heart to reach happiness?  Express your morals and values to support your answer
